Together for mangrove protection: More than five million mangroves have already been planted in the Philippines. through the Malizia Mangrove Park. Zurich is extending its support until at least 2028, providing an important foundation for the next goal: ten million mangroves.

As part of the long-standing partnership between Zurich Group Germany and Team Malizia, support for the Malizia Mangrove Park is entering its next phase. The park was launched in 2020 by Team Malizia and the Mama Earth Foundation and is implemented in close cooperation with Davao Oriental State University in the Philippines. Since then, the project has continued to develop through contributions from people and organisations around the world. Alongside the support of Zurich Group Germany, other partners, private donors, fans, friends and organisations have contributed to the planting of more than five million mangroves to date. Zurich Group Germany has made an important contribution in recent years and is now continuing its support until 2028. By continuing its commitment over the next two years, Zurich is also providing an important foundation for achieving the next goal. The next major step can now be taken, with a new and ambitious target set: ten million mangroves. The planting and restoration activities will therefore continue consistently over the coming years.

Mangroves play an important role in healthy coastal ecosystems. They store CO₂, provide habitats for numerous species and protect coastlines from the impacts of storms and erosion. At the same time, the projects create concrete income opportunities for local women and fishing communities. Mangrove restoration therefore combines environmental and social impact.

“The Malizia Mangrove Park combines ecological restoration with tangible benefits for local communities. Nature-based solutions can make coastal regions more resilient to extreme weather events. Almost five million mangroves planted through our collective efforts demonstrate what long-term commitment and strong partnerships can achieve. We are delighted to continue this journey with Team Malizia.” - Dr. Carsten Schildknecht, CEO of Zurich Gruppe Deutschland

For Team Malizia, the Malizia Mangrove Park is a central part of its “A Race We Must Win - Climate Action Now!” mission. The project demonstrates how nature-based solutions can contribute to ocean protection, biodiversity restoration and the support of local communities at the same time.

“Our goal is to restore degraded mangrove areas across different protected areas in a way that allows the ecosystems to regenerate naturally over the long term”, says skipper Boris Herrmann. “These major milestones help us turn a challenge that can initially seem almost impossible into concrete and achievable steps. At the same time, we want to inspire others to take action themselves and help protect this valuable ecosystem.”

Projects such as the Malizia Mangrove Park demonstrate the environmental and social impact that targeted investments in nature conservation can achieve. The Malizia Mangrove Park is funded entirely through donations and contributions from its supporters and operates on a non-profit basis. The funds go directly towards restoring marine and coastal ecosystems, combining biodiversity and coastal protection with tangible benefits for local communities.
